There Is More In Us

UWCSEA Activities

Item 1 of 6

“There is more in us than we know if we could be made to see it; perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.”

- Kurt Hahn, Founder of UWC

One of the five elements of the UWCSEA learning programme, Activities allow students to explore new interests, develop strengths, and pursue passions.

Activities invigorate the life of the College by bringing students together for creative, athletic, leadership and other endeavours.

Students enjoy success beyond the classroom as they build leadership and social skills and an understanding of group dynamics. Most importantly, they experience challenge and learn the value of commitment.

The programme is multifaceted and empowers K-12 students to dig deep, take appropriate risks and explore their capabilities beyond what they ever imagined possible.

The total number of student participants listed above is not inclusive of participants for the Communities Activities Programme (CAP).

STUDENT PROFILE: Pauline, Grade 12

Cross Country, Track and Field and Touch Rugby are my favourite sports. I find outdoor sports help with a positive mindset and well-being.

I joined UWCSEA in Grade 5 and through all Activities offered at UWCSEA, I've grown in ways I never would have expected.

In Grade 11, I was in a drama play and a dance show, which were outside my comfort zone. I was not the best performer, but as a person who normally prefers to let other people take the spotlight, I was proud of myself for taking a risk and getting on stage.

In Grade 12, I volunteered for leadership roles, served on the Activities Executive team, and helped lead Solar for East. I learned so much about working with others towards a goal and effective communication, and I find myself using these skills in other areas of my life.

I graduated in May 2022 and will study Geography at university. Activities have played a part in my choice of major; I want to continue learning from the natural world and exploring the connections and possibilities.

My advice to other students? Try new things. You’ll surprise yourself with what you can do and where it will take you.

STUDENT PROFILE: Matt, Grade 11

I really enjoy connecting with people and giving back. Throughout my years at UWCSEA, the Activities programme has given me so many opportunities to grow that passion.

Given the chance, you’ll always find me chatting to people, so the Middle School Ambassadors Activity was the perfect fit for me in Grade 6. I was part of a team of students that helped introduce the school to prospective families, take them on tours and explain what UWCSEA is all about.

I’ve played rugby my whole life and in High School, I helped coach the younger teams, and I also did a lot of volunteer coaching outside of school. I really enjoy coaching, it's a wonderful way to share your passion for a sport and to give back. Initially, I started coaching boys who wanted to play rugby at a similar level, but as my three younger sisters grew up, I started coaching girls' teams and realised how to rewarding it was to see their progression.

In Grade 11, I choose to volunteer with Genesis Sport Coaching for my Service. Once a week, we work with local children with a variety of disabilities and coach them in football, basketball, tennis, and relay races. It was challenging to work with non-verbal or autistic children, but also incredibly rewarding.

I became a better communicator and leader and learned the depths of my resiliency–to not give up when I’m in a difficult situation but to persevere.

UWCSEA gave me a passion for giving back to others and the importance of inclusion. Together with a group of friends,  I’m developing a new version of rugby for players of mixed abilities in Singapore. Our aim is to provide opportunities for sports for kids and young adults who don’t have access.

A UWCSEA rugby coach once told me, “You are not judged by your actions on the field, you are judged by your actions off the field.”

The importance of those values of respect, inclusion and working together has always stayed with me and inspires me to this day.
